Soroptimist El Dorado met January 1st at the Civic Center with 14 club members present.
President Gail Gomez called the meeting to order. December minutes were approved. Bebee Thomas presented the Treasurer’s report.
For the Director’s Minute, Gail noted January 11th is National Stop Human Trafficking Day. Information was provided on ‘Recognizing the Warning Signs.”
Brenda Burk introduced Ashley Horyna and Michell Ray, recipients of our club’s Live Your Dream Awards. President Gail and Brenda congratulated Ashley and Michell and presented their award checks. Both women are currently pursuing their educations at BCC.
We welcomed special guest Sonja Sommers Milbourne, instructor of Women in Society at BCC. Sonja discussed Gender Pay Inequity issues. She noted pay inequity not only affects the current spending power of women but also their retirement assets. Sonja also shared that healthier families are created when women’s rights are protected.
Jenette Doile reminded members the next work session at the Safe House Closet is January 5th.
Bonnie Foose reported our annual Potato Supper fundraiser is scheduled for Monday, March 6. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance from any Soroptimist El Dorado member. Profits will be used for our club awards and scholarships for women and girls in our community.
January donations collected were school supplies which will be given to local schools. Members were reminded February’s donation is pet food which will benefit Priscilla’s Pet Pantry at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Hostesses were Janett Doile, Sharon Mangels and Nancy Samp. Members attending not already mentioned were Sue Beattie, Ginger Glenn, Nancy Reddinger, Sue Reynolds, Joni Sanders, Judie Storandt and Edith Waugh. We adjourned with the Soroptimist Pledge.
