Soroptimist El Dorado holds January meeting

Soroptimist El Dorado met January 1st at the Civic Center with 14 club members present.

President Gail Gomez called the meeting to order. December minutes were approved. Bebee Thomas presented the Treasurer’s report.human-trafficing-ks

For the Director’s Minute, Gail noted January 11th is National Stop Human Trafficking Day. Information was provided on ‘Recognizing the Warning Signs.”

Brenda Burk introduced Ashley Horyna and Michell Ray, recipients of our club’s Live Your Dream Awards. President Gail and Brenda congratulated Ashley and Michell and presented their award checks. Both women are currently pursuing their educations at BCC.

We welcomed special guest Sonja Sommers Milbourne, instructor of Women in Society at BCC. Sonja discussed Gender Pay Inequity issues. She noted pay inequity not only affects the current spending power of women but also their retirement assets. Sonja also shared that healthier families are created when women’s rights are protected.

Jenette Doile reminded members the next work session at the Safe House Closet is January 5th.

Bonnie Foose reported our annual Potato Supper fundraiser is scheduled for Monday, March 6. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance from any Soroptimist El Dorado member. Profits will be used for our club awards and scholarships for women and girls in our community.

January donations collected were school supplies which will be given to local schools. Members were reminded February’s donation is pet food which will benefit Priscilla’s Pet Pantry at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Hostesses were Janett Doile, Sharon Mangels and Nancy Samp. Members attending not already mentioned were Sue Beattie, Ginger Glenn, Nancy Reddinger, Sue Reynolds, Joni Sanders, Judie Storandt and Edith Waugh. We adjourned with the Soroptimist Pledge.

Soroptimist El Dorado holds December meeting

Soroptimist El Dorado met December 5 with 20 club members present. The meeting was preceded by our Holiday Party. Club members brought beautifully wrapped gifts for families  adopted through The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program.

President Gail Gomez called the meeting to order. Julia Davis was installed as a new member. Julia was presented with a Soroptimist pin, blue candle, and yellow rose.

November minutes were approved. Bebee Thomas presented the Treasurer’s report.

For the Director’s Minute Judie Storandt presented information about the Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education & Training Awards for Women. Each fall we accept applications from women who provide the primary financial support for their families, and are seeking to improve their employment prospects through education.

Brenda Burk reported receiving several good applications for this year’s Live Your Dream Award. The award committee recommended giving awards to two  applicants, which was approved.

Sue Reynolds noted the next work day at the Safehouse Clothes Closet is January 5. Bernie Spradling thanked club members who volunteered to ring Salvation Army bells, and those who helped assemble Christmas packages for residents of local nursing homes.

Kelli Scott and Bonnie Foose said the next Best for Women Fair will be next fall.

Janett Doile reminded members school supplies will be collected at our January meeting for USD 490.

Accepting applications for $1000 cash award

$1000 Cash Award for Women Attending School while Supporting a Family!

The El Dorado Soroptimist club invites women to apply for its annual Live Your Dream Award (LYDA).

  • These awards assist women seeking to better support themselves and their families by gaining additional skills, training or education.
  • Award applicants must be women who are the primary financial support for a household, have at least one dependent (child, parent, spouse, etc.), and are enrolled in or have been accepted to a college program or vocational/skills training program.
  • Preference is given to applicants living or attending school in El Dorado.

At least one recipient will receive a cash award of $1000. Recipients can use award money for costs related to attaining additional education or training to improve their earning power. That includes tuition, books, child care, groceries, and transportation.

  • The club’s first place recipient will advance to the Soroptimist South Central Region to compete for additional cash awards. Award recipients from Soroptimist International’s 28 geographic regions are then eligible for one of four $14,000 finalist awards.

The deadline to submit an application is November 15, 2016. Applications and more information are available from club members, including the LYDA committee listed below, and also online at
